The Nigerian Teachers Registration Council (TRCN) has stated that more than 90 per cent of private school teachers in Southwest Nigeria do not have the a priori qualifications to be called teachers.
The Registrar, TRCN, Professor Josiah Ajiboye disclosed this in Abuja, Thursday while signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Instill Education to improve the skills of teachers working in the country.
Ajiboye said: “The pilot phase of the MoU implementation will begin soon, adding that a study conducted by the council found that more than 90 per cent of private school teachers in the Southwest were unqualified and not registerable with the TRCN, because they don’t possess the requisite qualification that will allow us to register them.
“There is a big gap Instill may be looking in the future to replicate what they are doing in South Africa. Instill can help in the in-service and upskilling of teachers because they have the expertise and technology to do that.
“We have been talking about mandatory continuous professional development for teachers to take certain capacity development programmes, they will get points, and this will count towards the renewal of their license, as well as their promotion,” he said.
The Operations Manager, Instill Education, Mr. Tom Parry said the training will enhance on-hand component to allow teachers to practice and understand, adding that they will also gain access to relevant qualitative, affordable, government-recognised hands-on training in their classrooms and help them achieve better learning outcomes.
He said: “Beyond the simple training processes that we build into our platform, we also think about the incentive structures. So, this is where we are talking more about this workforce development platform. Teachers will be incentivised simply to do training for the sake of getting better.”
