The World Health Organisation (WHO) has disclosed that about 3 million deaths caused by indoor pollution are recorded annually.
It added that 2.3 billion people use polluting fuels such as wood, charcoal, crop waste and kerosine for cooking, leading to millions of deaths each year and threatening the environment.
WHO made this statement public on its official Twitter handle @who on Tuesday.
“Indoor AirPollution causes noncommunicable diseases such as, Stroke by 23%, Ischaemic heart disease by 32%, Lung cancer by 6%, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by 19% and lower respiratory infection by 21%,” it stated.
According to the organisation, the world remains off track to achieve universal access to clean cooking by 2030, while noting that women and children are more impacted by cooking with polluting fuels.
“Still 2.3 billion people globally use polluting fuels for cooking, leading to millions of deaths each year and threatening our environment. Due to the lack of access to clean fuels & technologies, 3 out of 10 people globally do not have access to clean cooking fuels and clean cooking solutions protects health and tackle climate change,” WHO noted.
