The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has released a report indicating a significant decrease in Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) during the Third Quarter (Q3) of 2023.
The report shows that the number of RTCs decreased by 26.29 per cent to 2,187 incidents compared to the previous quarter’s 2,967 incidents. In comparison to the same quarter in the previous year, the decline in RTCs increased to 35.90 per cent.
Between September and December, 3,371 vehicles were involved in road crashes, which is lower than the 4,615 recorded between May and August 2023. These crashes resulted in 908 fatalities and 6,041 injuries.
The report also highlights a gender disparity among the casualties, with the majority occurring among men. Out of the 908 deaths, 743 were men, and of the 6,041 injured, 4,625 were men. In comparison, women accounted for 165 deaths and 1,416 injuries.
The North Central region recorded the highest number of RTCs in Q3, with 880 cases, followed by the Southwest region with 600 cases, and the South-South with the lowest number of cases 107. Consequently, the North Central region had the highest number of casualties, totaling 2,548, followed by the Southwest region with 1,802 casualties, and the South-South with 281 casualties.
