The National Examinations Council, NECO, has taken a firm stance against exam malpractice by blacklisting two supervisors for their involvement in various infractions.
This announcement was made by the Registrar of NECO, Prof Dantani Wushishi, during the unveiling of the e-posting software aimed at facilitating seamless staff posting for the council’s scheduled examinations.
Prof Wushishi also revealed the statistics for the November/December 2023 External Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE).
A total of 74,950 candidates registered for the exam, with 74,342 candidates sitting for the exercise. Of these, 50,066 candidates, representing 67.35%, secured five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics.
In his breakdown of the candidates’ performance, Prof Wushishi stated, “The number of candidates that registered for the examination is 74,950 with 39,213 (52.31%) male and 35,737 (47.68%) female.”
He also highlighted the number of candidates who sat for English Language and Mathematics, with 75.59% and 92.75% respectively achieving credit and above.
While acknowledging a reduction in malpractice cases compared to the previous year, Prof Wushishi expressed concern over the 8,518 candidates booked for various forms of malpractice.
He emphasized that two supervisors were blacklisted for poor supervision, inability to control candidates, and aiding and abetting malpractice.
“The examination malpractice cases for 2023 SSCE External included two centres, one each in Kaduna and Ogun States involved in whole centre cases,” Prof Wushishi stated. “Two supervisors, one each in Oyo and Lagos States, were blacklisted for poor supervision, inability to control the candidates, and for aiding and abetting. One centre in Borno State was blacklisted for aiding and abetting by sharing WhatsApp messages to candidates.”
He urged candidates to access their results by visiting the NECO official website using their examination registration number. This move by NECO demonstrates a commitment to upholding the integrity of examinations and ensuring fairness for all candidates.
