The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has cautioned state governors against neglecting the critical health sector while focusing on road infrastructure.
Speaking at her 17th annual free medical outreach in Isuochi, Abia State, Onyejeocha emphasized that a healthy population is more vital than infrastructure development.
“Governors should diversify their focus to include the health sector, agriculture, and security. A crumbling health sector means we are fostering a sick population,” Onyejeocha stressed.
Her remarks come from a place of experience, having previously served as Deputy Whip of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation.
The outreach, funded by Onyejeocha’s personal savings, has treated over 120 patients, including 35 surgical cases, with plans to serve 600 medical patients and 400 surgical cases. Common conditions treated include hernia, malaria, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
Beneficiaries have expressed gratitude, describing Onyejeocha as “God-sent” and sharing stories of how her efforts have saved their families from financial ruin.
Onyejeocha has reaffirmed her commitment to providing free healthcare, vowing to continue the initiative regardless of the cost.
