Nyakarambi (Kirehe): Young and adult prostitutes are gradually renouncing their undignified profession and their association which was 60 strong before, and they are starting an income-generating activity which gives them respect and value, according to the Vice -Mayor of Social Affairs of Kirehe district, Janvière Mukandayisenga.
“It is true that Kirehe has an association of professional prostitutes which still exists today. But its members are gradually reducing following some who give up this less than stellar profession. Other younger ones who have become single mothers have followed our advice. Some agree to return to the school bench and prepare for their future. An example is a young girl from the Kigina sector who renounced this association and whom we took to a school to continue her studies. In short, the association has no more young recruits entering it. Other members became mothers and started homes. The older ones also saw fit to demobilize, ”she says.
Vice-Mayor Mukandayisenga made these remarks on May 4 on the sidelines of RBC’s visit to the Nyakarambi center where he hosted a show and a theater aimed at mobilizing the public to stop HIV / AIDS, especially to enhance their knowledge on HIV/AIDS.

Vice-Mayor of Social Affairs of Kirehe District, Janvière Mukandayisenga.
The Vice-Mayor of Social Affairs noted that the new infections like the old ones are still in place. The shortcoming resulted from the fact that people with the disease were slow to get tested at the health center or at the hospital. They began by seeking treatment from traditional healers. Which let the infection get worse. But by dint of raising awareness among young people through various channels, new infections are declining in the district.
“We even have young people on ARVs in our secondary schools like Kirehe High School, which has four young people who are well monitored by the management. Everyone was provided with a small thermos for the porridge. They are given an egg and a rich diet to strengthen them especially as they take a daily pill as an ARV. They are not victims of any discrimination on the part of other students who have been trained to live with HIV-positive people, in good school supervision,” informs Mukandayisenga.
Kirehe district totals more than 3800 people on ARVs
The Vice-Mayor stresses that we venture into sex without protection due to a lack of information and awareness. Both parents were urged to take responsibility and look after their children’s upbringing. Because, “We have reinvigorated the culture of exchange with children in order to improve the behavior of young people. When one does not know how to maintain continence, one practices at least protected sexual relations. The anti-AIDS clubs in place contribute to maintaining an alert conscience among young people made up of motorbike and bicycle drivers, young school dropouts from rural areas. Our partners like RDO and HDI collaborate with us in this area. Each sector has 20 young people gathered in an anti-AIDS club, while other similar clubs are gradually being established elsewhere to fight against HIV/AIDS”, she continued.
It should be remembered that Kirehe is on the international road that is too busy with drivers who stay in the Nyakarambi Center and who sleep there with prostitutes. We sensitized everyone in this Center to use condoms to avoid pregnancy and AIDS. But there are times when condom distribution becomes irregular. To overcome this shortcoming, we have reinforced the distribution of condoms on the main axis Gatore-Rusumo. All traders are required to sell condoms and no one is allowed to practice unprotected sex. The district partners who also operate in the Mahama camp have made their contribution in this cape and outside it to lead an effective fight against the spread of the AIDS virus.
Last year, 950 people were put on ARVs, including 27 young girls, who give testimonies to encourage other young people to protect themselves. This is proof that infections are on the decline, they are convinced that doing circumcision for their child while he is still young helps to protect him,” said the Vice-Mayor of Social Affairs.
With regard to teenage pregnancies, she indicated that from July 2022 to March 203, 117 pregnancies have been reported, including 25 pregnancies for young girls under the age of 18 for the month of March alone.
‘These pregnancies have regressed significantly following the various efforts that we have invested. The previous year, we had recorded 950 pregnancies, including 117 in 9 months. There is hope to make progress and reduce these cases,” Mukandayisenga further noted. (END)
