The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) have announced their intention to hold a nationwide protest in response to the withholding of four months’ salaries and other unresolved issues affecting their members in universities and inter-university centers.
In a joint circular released by NASU’s General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi, and SSANU’s National President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, on Sunday, the unions revealed that the protest is scheduled to kick off on July 9, 2024, at state chapters across the country, culminating in a national protest in Abuja on July 18.
Expressing their disappointment with the lack of progress in addressing their concerns, the unions stated, “The engagement with the Minister of Education has not shown any convincing commitment on the payment of the withheld salaries and resolutions of other pending grievances of JAC of the two unions.”
In response to the government’s perceived inaction, NASU and SSANU have outlined a series of industrial actions, including mandatory general meetings on July 8 to raise awareness among members, a one-day protest on July 9 at all branches, and a national protest in Abuja on July 18. Further details regarding a potential strike action will be communicated following these protests.
The unions urged members to actively participate in the upcoming demonstrations, emphasizing the need for solidarity in addressing their grievances.
