The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern over the suffering, violence, and climate-related catastrophes that occurred worldwide in 2023.
Guterres highlighted 2023 as the hottest year on record stating, “Humanity is in pain. Our planet is in peril. People are getting crushed by growing poverty and hunger. Wars are growing in number and ferocity. And trust is in short supply.”
Guterres stressed the importance of unity and finding collective solutions in the face of these hardships while urging people to put aside blame and violence and instead work together to address these issues in the coming year.
The Secretary-General emphasised the strength of humanity when united and called for 2024 to be a year of rebuilding trust and restoring hope. He highlighted the need for global cooperation on climate action, economic opportunity, and a fairer financial system.
Guterres also addressed the growing discrimination and hatred between countries and communities, calling on everyone to stand up against such behaviour. He urged the responsible use of new technologies like artificial intelligence for the benefit of all.
“Together, we must stand up against the discrimination and hatred that are poisoning relations between countries and communities. And we must make sure new technologies such as artificial intelligence are a force for good,” said Guterres.
In his New Year’s message, Guterres wished for a peaceful year ahead and assured the world that the United Nations would continue to rally for peace, sustainable development, and human rights. He called on everyone to make 2024 a year of building trust and hope in what can be achieved together.
