The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti has called for global action to eliminate Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).
In a message delivered under the theme “Unite. Act. Eliminate,” Dr. Moeti emphasises the need for collective efforts to address the severe impact of these diseases on billions of people worldwide.
Dr. Moeti calls on individuals and communities to take action by spreading awareness, advocating with those in power, and mobilizing resources.
The goal is to create a world where diseases, such as river blindness and leprosy, no longer cause suffering and debilitation.
Dr. Moeti commends Africa’s progress in the fight against NTDs citing achievements such as 18 million fewer people requiring interventions, 19 countries eliminating at least one NTD, and Togo’s historic elimination of four diseases: river blindness, elephantiasis, sleeping sickness, and Guinea worm disease. Yaws is also on the brink of elimination.
“Togo achieves a historic milestone by eliminating four NTDs, river blindness, elephantiasis, sleeping sickness, and Guinea worm disease, showcasing Africa’s remarkable achievements in the fight against these diseases.
“Public-private partnerships and contributions from non-governmental organisations, including the Neglected Tropical Disease NGO Network (NNN), have played a pivotal role in the successes, with pharmaceutical companies donating crucial medications,” she said.
Dr. Moeti stresses the importance of maintaining momentum and translating political commitment into transformative action. The Kigali Declaration calls for high-level commitment, while the launch of the Mwele Malecela Mentorship Programme for Women in NTDs highlights the role of leadership in driving progress.
