The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a midnight ultimatum to the Federal Government to free its detained President, Joe Ajaero, or risk serious repercussions. Ajaero was allegedly apprehended at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja while en- route to the UK for the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Britain.
In a statement issued by NLC Deputy President Prince Adewale Adeyanju, the union denounced the arrest as “disturbing and illegal.” The NLC emphasized that the labour leader was taken into custody without a warrant or legal grounds, labelling the action as an “attack on workers’ rights and democratic values.”
The NAC firmly denounces the bold and unlawful arrest of Comrade Joe Ajaero by the Nigerian government, stating that it was made without any legal warrant or justification.
The NLC has issued a warning to its affiliates and civil society partners, stating that the arrest represents a threat to workers’ rights. The union also emphasized its calls for reversing the recent increase in petrol prices and for the prompt enactment of the new National Minimum Wage.
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the NLC will meet on Tuesday at 9 AM to decide on the course of action if Ajaero is not released by the set deadline, according to the statement.
